When the town was named it was overlooked that there was already a township in the South Island which had the same name hence the addition of North to the name in 1873. About 140 km north of Wellington, Palmerston North has a population of over 85,000 making it the seventh largest city and eighth largest urban area in New Zealand.

Captain James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour were the first Europeans to enter the Whangarei Harbour entrance where, in 1769 they caught about one hundred fish which they classified as "bream" (probably snapper) prompting Cook to name the area Bream Bay. The wider Whangarei area has a population of over 80,000.
