There are some things that you simply shouldn't give as wedding gifts which include -
Knives: Signify a broken relationship - not a good start hey!
Clock: Giving a clock signifies you want to attend the couple's funeral. Hmmm, perhaps not ...
Handkerchief: Signify that you want the couple to cry. OK so even if you actually mean tears of joy perhaps this should be avoided!
Perfume: Signifies wanting to attract another person into the relationship. No, three in a relationship definitely does not work!
Money: Whilst it is actually quite popular nowadays for the couple to ask for money there are some traditions where certain etiquette should be followed (China: gold emboss the envelope for double happiness)
Single Rose: In Italy giving a single rose signifies wishing death on the receiver. Not a good look!
Empty wallet/purse: Signifies wishing to ruin the couple's finances. Give them a break the wedding's probably already cost a fortune! Break the superstition by putting some money in the wallet!
Fountain: Feng Shui dictates by giving a fountain money will flow away from the receiver!
Luggage: Giving that travel bag you thought would be great for the honeymoon isn't such a good idea. Luggage signifies you want the couple to get up and leave (and not just on a lovely honeymoon)!
Flowers: Some plants indoors signify misfortune. Beware of red and white flowers, lilacs and bluebells in particular!
Scissors:: Signify the same principle as knives signifying a broken relationship, however useful they could be, avoid them!
Umbrella: Whilst it is lucky to rain on your wedding day it's actually unlucky to receive an umbrella - borrow one if the forecast is bad!
Mirror: We know it's 7 years bad luck if you break a mirror and this spills over into the gifting of a mirror for a wedding
Shoes: If given to the groom signify he will either walk out or walk all over the bride. Neither scenario is desirable!
Glassware: Can signify destroying a relationship like broken glass, again not ideal!
A Gift you received yourself: To re-gift is never a good look but it also signifies the giving away of the relationship between the original giver of the gift and the original receiver. May not affect the wedding couple but still a no-no!
